The Origins of Qaitbay Fort and Its History


In 1477, Al Ashraf Qaitbay, the Mamluk Sultan, gave the order to build the renowed fort. Using the remaining stones from the famed old lighthouse, the fort was built atop its ruins.

Its construction, which was finished two years later in 1479, was undertaken to defend Alexandria against outside threats, particularly from the Ottomans, who once possessed a potent naval force.

Two pieces make up the fortified walls. Towers for defence and locations for soldiers to guard it are built into the exterior walls. The troops' barracks and the weapon storage area are located inside the inner walls.


Fort Qaitbay's main tower has three levels and is semi-square in shape. At each of this section's four corners are furthermore four towers with a circular design. Alexandria's oldest remaining mosque and minaret are located inside the tower.
